St Mary’s Church, a former Church of England parish church in Tyneham, Dorset, is a Grade II listed building with origins dating back to the 13th century, featuring later additions and restorations. Now maintained by the Ministry of Defence, it serves as a museum and historical monument. In December 1943, the War Office requisitioned Tyneham as part of a 7,500-acre expansion for the Lulworth Ranges. Some of St Mary’s Church furnishings, including its bells, reredos, and organ, were moved to nearby locations for safekeeping. Although the requisition was meant to be temporary, the village was permanently acquired by the War Office in 1948. The church was designated a safety area to protect it from gunnery damage, but by 1950, it had sustained accidental hits, including shells through the roof.
